Michael Johnson, Jr., Fordham High School for the Arts in the Bronx, Principal
Michael Johnson, Jr. is a dedicated educational leader with nearly 20 years of experience serving New York City Public Schools. As Principal of Fordham High School for the Arts in the Bronx, he has championed culturally responsive teaching, student empowerment, and academic excellence. Under his leadership, the school earned the prestigious distinction of being named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School in the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. Michael was also recognized as a Model Principal for FutureReadyNYC, a citywide initiative that highlights school leaders driving innovative and equitable approaches to career-connected learning and student success. His leadership and the voices of his students were featured in the HBO documentary My So-Called High School Rank, which follows students across the nation navigating college pressures through the creation of an original musical during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michael’s career in education began as a Mathematics teacher and Teach For America corps member at Fordham High School for the Arts, where his passion for educational equity and student-centered leadership first took root. Additionally, he served as Assistant Principal for nine years before assuming the role of Principal in 2020. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Neuroscience from Duke University, a Master of Science in Adolescent Education from Pace University, and an Ed.M. in Educational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University. A dedicated husband and father, Michael continues to advocate for schools to elevate student voice, promote truth-seeking, and empower young people to become agents of change in their communities.
