Dr. Cindy Corcoran, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Support Services, Rockingham County Schools
Dr. Cindy Corcoran is a dedicated lifelong educator and proud resident of Reidsville, North Carolina, where she lives with her husband of 40 years, Brad. Together, they have raised three children—Stephen, Rachel, and Candice—all of whom are now married and thriving in their own careers. Her two daughters have followed in her footsteps in education, one serving as a second-grade teacher and the other as a school nurse. Dr. Corcoran is also the proud grandmother of five: Clary-Anne (7), Henry and Easton (5), Maddox (2), and Graysen (15 months).
Dr. Corcoran began her career in education in 1984 as a Special Education teacher in Virginia, serving students across all grade levels for 17 years. In 2001, she and her family relocated to Eden, North Carolina, where she joined Rockingham County Schools as a third-grade teacher at Douglass Elementary. Her leadership journey began soon after, when she became Assistant Principal at the same school.
Over the past 24 years with Rockingham County Schools, Dr. Corcoran has held numerous leadership roles, including Principal at both the elementary and middle school levels, Director of Elementary/Title I, Executive Director of Exceptional Children’s Programs, and Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Support Services. She also serves as the district’s Title IX Coordinator and has recently expanded her responsibilities to include School Safety.
Dr. Corcoran is a respected voice in education across North Carolina, frequently presenting on topics that highlight the innovative work of Rockingham County Schools. She holds multiple degrees: a B.S. from Concord College (1984), an M.A. in Special Education from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies (1987), an M.S. in Educational Administration from Shenandoah University (2002), an Ed.S. from Appalachian State University (2007), and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2012).
Her dedication and impact have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the PEP - Jack McCall Award, the NCASCD Distinguished Educator’s Award, and the WE LEAD – Women in Education Leaders Award. She is actively involved in her community and has served on various boards, including the Rockingham County Education Foundation, March of Dimes, and the United Way.
Dr. Corcoran remains deeply committed to advancing quality public education in Rockingham County. Outside of her professional responsibilities, she enjoys visiting the beach, walking, reading, traveling, and playing golf. She is also a passionate advocate for women's leadership, stating:
“Supporting and lifting up other women should be a part of who we are as female leaders. Helping and assisting those after us in shattering the glass ceiling leaves a legacy for others to aspire to.”
